Towing Training

Anyone who passed their driving test on or after the 1 January 1997 and now have a requirement to tow a Trailer, Horsebox or Caravan with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of more than 750kgs will need to pass an additional driving test so that they can add Category E on to their existing license.

The MAM is the Maximum potential weight of the trailer and its load combined also known as the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) as shown on the manufacturer’s plate or in the handbook.

Trailers with a MAM of less than 750kgs would be small camping or DIY type trailers and would not be fitted with brakes. Horsebox trailers normally have a MAM of between 2000 and 2500kgs, Caravans are normally between 1000 and 1500kgs, Car Transporters and Plant Trailers can be up to 3500kgs.

The amount of training the candidate requires will vary depending on their previous driving experience but Aurelia normally recommend three 6 hour days to ensure that the candidate reaches the required standard. The training and tests can be carried out using either the candidates own vehicle and trailer if they are suitable or alternatively Aurelia’s which are based both at the Ixworth near Bury St Edmunds and the Kentford near Newmarket Training Centres.

Aurelia can book the test which is conducted by Large Goods Vehicle examiners at the lorry test centres and it takes about 1½ hours. The first part consists of 5 questions which will be a combination of ‘Show me and Tell me’, followed by an off road reversing manoeuvre, an emergency stop and hitching and un-hitching the trailer. The second part is on the road and is a full test during which you will be expected to drive to a very high standard. Particular emphasis is placed on use of mirrors, all round observation, road positioning and consideration for other road users.
